How to Maintain Beautiful Skin After a Facial

Q. I just got a facial and my skin feels amazing. How do I maintain the results?

Licensed esthetician Catie Wiggy responds:

A. Ahh! Nothing beats a relaxing, professional facial that leaves your skin feeling soft, silky smooth, and beaming with a healthy glow.

I recommend getting a facial once every 3 months or a minimum of 4 times a year if possible, for a myriad of reasons. For one, regularly checking in with an expert allows you to proactively maintain healthy, youthful skin. If you’re struggling with breakouts or  fighting flaky dryness, a professional facial can restore balance and set your skin on the right path. Touching base with a licensed pro also allows you to seek advice and target specific results. And last but not least, facials are fabulous way to relax, unwind and get some much-needed TLC.

When getting a facial, try to remember at the very end (in your uber relaxed spa daze) to ask your esthetician if there are any post-facial treatment instructions you should follow. Depending on what you had done, you may need to avoid exfoliating for a few days or weeks, or need to increase sun protection and in some cases, avoid sun exposure all together. Professional peels and treatments like microdermabrasion and laser therapies can leave your skin in a sensitive state, requiring specific care.

To maintain that “facial feel” every day, commit to a morning and evening routine and stick with it. You’ll want to use a cleanser, serum, moisturizer and protective product with SPF. Consider using the Perfect C Serum every morning to protect your skin’s health while combating the signs of aging by strengthening collagen and diminishing uneven skin tone.

Capture that special spa experience by creating “treatment nights” in which you exfoliate with a scrub or peel and follow up with a soothing, restorative facial mask. By exfoliating 2-3 times per week, you can increase cell turnover which in turns softens your skin’s texture.

One of my favorite duos is MyChelle Tropical Skin Smoother and Hydrating Cactus Mask. Tropical Skin Smoother is an antioxidant and moisture-rich skin exfoliator that retexturizes and buffs away dead skin cells and debris. Follow up with MyChelle Hydrating Cactus Mask, a soothing treatment that softens skin while deeply hydrating and preventing moisture loss.

By creating a consistent routine and giving your skin a little extra TLC a few times per week, you can maintain all of the benefits of a high-end facial with minimal cost!
