Q. My skin seems to have taken a beating during the winter months. Now that spring is here, I am a little worried about facial cleansers because I don’t want to make matters worse. What do you recommend?
Dr. Linda Miles, D.O.M., responds
Yes, winter can definitely take its toll on skin. However, just because you may be suffering with a dry, dehydrated or irritated complexion, that does not mean you should skip the cleansing step in your skin care routine. While it is the most basic step, cleansing is key for healthy, glowing skin. Morning and night, it is essential to use a cleanser that removes dirt, impurities, sweat and makeup to unclog pores. This will leave skin healthy, less problematic and ready to gain the maximum benefits from the rest of your skin care routine.
To start, avoid soaps and look for cleansers specifically formulated for facial skin. Next, make sure the cleanser does not contain known irritants such as sodium lauryl sulfates. Now, as far as what to look for, make sure the cleanser is pH balanced so it does not strip your skin of its natural oils. Natural ingredients such as vitamins, antioxidants and botanicals are also important to look for because they are not only gentle but they can offer added benefits.
For skin that is severely dry and dehydrated, try the derma e ® Hydrating Cleanser with Hyaluronic Acid. This natural, deeply moisturizing facial cleanser is pH balanced and rinses away dirt and impurities without drying skin. It contains ultra-hydrating Hyaluronic Acid (known for its ability to draw in moisture), botanical extracts Chamomile and Lemon Grass, and antioxidant Vitamin E. After use, skin will feel clean, soft and dewy-fresh.
If you find that your skin has become more red and irritated because you have sensitive skin, try the derma e ® Soothing Facial Cleanser. This rich, satiny-smooth cleanser is fragrance-free, pH balanced and specifically formulated for sensitive skin types. With soothing anti-aging antioxidant Pycnogenol ®, comforting Chamomile and Lemon Grass, and nourishing antioxidant Green Tea, even the most sensitive skin is left feeling calm, healthy and refreshed. This formula is also ideal for those who suffer from symptoms of rosacea.
No matter what time of year, never skip the cleansing step in your skin care routine. Using a gentle, pH balanced formula that contains natural ingredients will lead to healthy, beautiful skin.
