Skincare in Your 20s, 30s, 40s and Beyond

Q: I know that skincare needs change over time. But how do I know which products to use — and when to start using them?

MyChelle Dermaceuticals licensed esthetician Catie Wiggy responds:

Strolling down the skincare aisle of any store, it becomes clear that that choosing “the right products” isn’t always easy. With so many cleansers and creams and treatments available, many women resort to trial and error — grabbing whatever looks best at the time, usually according to simple (and often misleading) claims on labels.

To pick the right products, it helps to understand what’s happening to your skin during different stages of life. Here’s a simple guide to skincare broken down by decade, along with some products I recommend to help keep you looking your best at any age:

The 20s: Get proactive about anti-aging. If you’re in your 20s, now is the time to take active steps to prevent future signs of aging. First, keep skin well moisturized and protected, applying a quality sunscreen daily. Incorporate an antioxidant-rich serum such as MyChelle Perfect C Serum into your routine to help prevent free radical damage and improve the overall health of your skin. And use a targeted eye cream, such as MyChelle Fabulous Eye Cream, to hydrate the delicate skin under the eyes, preventing fine lines and wrinkles.

The 30s: Focus on balance. For most women, the oiliness of our teen skin and combination craziness of our 20s is behind us. Balanced, healthy skin becomes the focus of our 30s. Start introducing your skin to key ingredients such as peptides and plant stem cells. Supreme Polypeptide Cream is a great moisturizer and anti-aging treatment, all in one. Use the Fruit Fiesta Peel to improve cellular turnover and keep your skin glowing.

The 40s: Stop the clock. When we hit 40 and fabulous, it’s time to tackle aging head on. Make sure your regimen consists of regular exfoliation, hydration and protection. Use the NoTox Anti-Wrinkle Serum to support collagen and elastin while minimizing wrinkles. Try the Apple Brightening Serum to diminish hyperpigmentation and improve the overall appearance of skin. Also, make sure you’re protecting your skin year round from the sun with a high SPF sunscreen such as Replenishing Solar Defense SPF 30.

It is indeed a tough task to choose the right skin care products that work well on skin. Women of every age group require different products according to skin type. Thank you for enhancing my knowledge about various things the need to be given attention to while choosing skin care products.

I’m looking for a foundation that will make my skin look dewy not matte. And it must go on smooth almost like a light cream. Any suggestions? I’m 62

I meant to say, that it replaces foundation for me. :-)

Linda, I am 56 and have been wanting to get away from wearing little or no more foundation as I find it settling in my lines and it just seems to heavy anymore. I’ve discovered the best BB and CC creams out of Korea. One I absolutely love is called Elishacoy Premium Gold BB cream. It matches your skin tone perfectly and leaves a light, even and dewy look to your complexion. I also really like Tony Moly CC cream. I got a sample of the Elishacoy and find it to be perfect.

I am a 68 year old woman. I have used the Obagi NuDerm System for 15 years with wonderful results. About 2 times a week I would like to use something a little less harsh, more natural, to give my skin a break.
What would you recommend as a skin care regimen?
    Thank you, Barbara Brooke

I’m now 61 and really only noticing those lines around my lips and grooves at the sides of my mouth, as well as that my neck is a bit baggy but I don’t have any particular creams or lotions that I use. I would like to know a good skin care product that I can use and know this will help my skin as I age further. thanks Jan
