Watch Out, Sun Worshippers!

Harmful rays from the sun can damage your skin all year round, and this time of year they can be particularly strong. Plus, sun damage can lead to wrinkles””and who wants those? (Not me!)

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight affects skin in a number of ways, from painful sunburn to premature aging to DNA damage.

To best protect your skin, go for a high-quality sunscreen. Some of our customer favorites are: Alba Very Emollient Sunscreen Mineral Protection and    Jason  Sunbrellas Mineral Based Physical Sunblock SPF 30. My personal favorite is MyChelle  Sun Shield SPF 28  because I like that this sunblock is unscented. Plus, I love just about anything from MyChelle–one of my favorite beauty brands!

Some more TLC tips for protecting and pampering your skin:

  • Choose sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher that provides both UVA and UVB protection.
  • Avoid products that contain oxybenzone, vitamin A (retinyl palmitate), parabens, PABA and other artificial ingredients that can pose further health risks.
  • Apply sunscreen liberally to all exposed areas of skin–don’t forget your ears, back of your neck and tops of your feet.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two to three hours if spending extended time outdoors.

Great tips! I will definitely try the MyChelle unscented. The one thing I don’t like about sunscreen is the scent so I will check this out!

Thanks for the advice, will definitely try one of the products suggested. I’ve used other sun care products from drugstore’s but now have become more aware about the harmful chemicals in these products. Will also try Mychelle’s Sun Shield from Vitacost, seems to have the best price and the reviews are very positive. Also their Sun Shield is Gluten free!

the general rule is that you shulod use at least a 30 SPF sunscreen. If you want a really good sunscreen, you shulod look under the ingredients for sunscreens that have zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or oxybenzone. The sunscreen shulod also protect against UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays cause sunburn and UVA rays penetrate the skin on a deeper level. Both rays can cause cancer. As for the SPF, for a person that would be burned after 10 minutes in the sun unprotected, they would be able to stay in the sun for 250 minutes without being burned if they applied a sunscreen with 25 SPF. The reccomended time between sunscreen applications in 2-3 hours.Hope this helps!
