Adults Make Crabby Patients

At my four-week, post-abdominal-surgery appointment, my doctor told me I was “free.” I could practice yoga, do cardio, drive””whatever!   And I no longer had to wear an abdominal binder.

I smiled with gratitude and joy and thanked my dear surgeon, telling him the whole experience had been, well, just great. He replied that he believed the key to my quick recovery (1/3 less time than the anticipated “norm”) was my attitude. He said that my positive attitude had everything to do with why I was “free” at four weeks, instead of six.

I told a friend of mine””a nurse at a children’s hospital””about this, and she said:

“Moving around and positive thinking makes such a difference in the healing process. When I was still in nursing school (way back when!), I didn’t like taking care of adults. I felt like they were constantly complaining and dwelling upon not feeling well. I almost stopped my nursing studies.

But then I did my clinicals in pediatrics, with my senior practicum on the oncology floor of the children’s hospital. The kids were so sick, but they still ran around, smiling and playing.  It really put things in perspective. And 22 years later, I’m still at that children’s hospital.”
