I have very dry, itchy skin, especially on my legs (after I shave, it’s the worst!) What are some natural ways I can soothe the itchiness?
Dr. Linda Miles L. Ac., D.O.M. responds:
When skin is noticeably dry and itchy, especially after you shower and shave, this generally means that your skin is not as hydrated as it should be. Showering also removes many of our natural oils that are the skin’s natural protection from the elements. To help relieve this uncomfortable dry, itchy feeling, it is important to sufficiently hydrate the surface of the skin every day.
Choose crèmes and lotions rich in natural moisturizing and nourishing oils, such as jojoba, safflower and vitamin E. Vitamin E not only supplies moisture to the skin but it also helps skin retain moisture. derma e ®‘s Vitamin E 12,000 IU Crème as well as the Hand & Body Moisture Therapy Lotions (in Tangerine, Pink Grapefruit, Lavender and Fragrance-Free) are excellent choices for providing all day, all over body hydration. Apply your product of choice once or twice a day, and make sure you are consistent with it.
Additionally, hydrating from the inside-out by drinking plenty of water (I recommend approximately eight glasses a day) will help keep skin soft, smooth and moisturized.
If you have tried regular moisturizing and still find that you need to alleviate an itchy sensation, look for formulas rich in natural ingredients such as Tea Tree and Chamomile. Tea Tree contains potent antifungal, antibacterial and antiseptic properties that penetrate quickly and help provide relief from bacterial and fungal skin issues. Chamomile delivers anti-inflammatory properties that help calm and soothe itchy skin and relieve skin irritation, chafing and cuts. You can find these effective natural ingredients as well as moisturizing Vitamin E in derma e ®‘s Itch Relief Lotion with Tea Tree, E and Chamomile.
