Look “Well-Rested”–Even When You’re Not

Q. It seems that no matter how much sleep I get, I have these awful dark circles under my eyes. Is there anything I can do to look less exhausted?

Dr. Linda Miles L. Ac., D.O.M. responds:

One of the most common questions I get asked is, “how do I get rid of dark under-eye circles?” First and foremost, we need to understand why those dark circles appear. Often, they are indicitive of an internal imbalance that needs to be corrected. You cannot get rid of dark under-eye circles completely until you identify the imbalance and correct it.

How to Look Well Rested--Even When You're Not

In Chinese medicine, the appearance of dark under-eye circles is said to be related to a “kidney deficiency”–with “kidney” not considered just an organ but rather a set of functions that regulate the aging process, from birth to death. Herbs and acupuncture are used to support kidney health and therefore contribute to remedying the under eye problem.

While genetics can play a part in the appearance of dark circles and puffiness, environmental and lifestyle factors also contribute. Allergies, sleep deprivation and stress are all reasons dark circles may appear. Again, these issues all indicate an imbalance in the body that needs to be addressed.

While taking steps to correct the imbalance is the best step, there are topical solutions that can help reduce the appearance of dark under-eye circles.

derma e as formulated our new Evenly Radiant Dark Circle Eye Creme with herbs, antioxidants and the mineral pigment zinc oxide to help visibly reduce the appearance of dark circles.

For maximum benefits, gently massage the creme from the inner corner to the outer edge of your under eye area to stimulate the flow of blood and lymph. Regular use will promote younger, brighter, and healthier-looking eyes.

So remember, while topical products can help reduce the look of dark under-eye circles, try to address the internal imbalance as well–get plenty of sleep and minimize stress through activities such as meditation and yoga for more rested and radiant-looking eyes.
