When I first heard the phrase “toxic acid overload” on my fave TV health talk show yesterday, I thought it sounded like the name of a 1980s heavy metal band. But it turns out that there are “acid-forming” foods that can cause all sorts of chaos in your body. One of them was weight gain, said the doc—yikes! No thanks!
Some of these bad-boy foods were said to include:
- Refined carbs (cookies, potato chips, white bread)
- High-fat dairy (butter, I’m looking at you!)
- Animal protein
Of course we might all be better off if we ate fewer or none of these mischievous menu items, but if you have been buttering your white bread and then chomping on bacon, the doc said you can actually use alkaline foods as a sort of neutralizer.
I’m happy to hear all of this because (a) I do love butter, and carbs (butter cookies were my undoing this Christmas!), even though I try to not eat them; and (b) I adore many of the foods that the doc included as “alkaline!” Quinoa, avocado, lemons, celery…nom nom nom!
My colleague Katie recently shared this yummy recipe for Colorful Red Quinoa and Avocado Salad, and it sounds like just what the doctor ordered. It’s what’s for dinner tonight. And…because I do have some will power…I will be skipping the butter cookies afterwards!
