Getting back into the school-year groove is a mixed blessing. For both parents and children, the late summer and early fall typically means a return to a predictable routine. But it also often means jammed-packed schedules: after-school activities, keeping up grades and studying for critical exams. School days often lead to school daze, with added stress and pressures for all family members.
Q. I try to manage stress as best as I can, but I think it’s starting to affect my skin. What should I do?
MyChelle Dermaceuticals licensed esthetician Catie Wiggy responds:
In today’s fast paced world, we’re always on the go—with added stress to boot. Everyday environmental aggressors, hormones and diet are all contributing factors to frazzled skin. Signs of stressed skin show up in various ways, from dehydration and dryness to irritation and redness. Heck, even breakouts can arise. Signs of aging can also become more apparent when skin is under stress. Definitely not what anyone wants to deal with.
Between juggling careers, family life, friendships and everything in between, women have little time to care for themselves. It’s no wonder our stress levels are so high.
Too much stress can lead to all sorts of problems, from irritability and anxiety to loss of sleep, weight gain and even hormone imbalances. However, there are several ways women can de-stress with both diet and exercise. And if you get started with these healthy habits now, you can lessen the impact of stress before it hits.
It may be cliché, but there is nothing like a good long soak in the tub after a long week of deadlines, fighting children, packing lunches and bosses with halitosis breathing down your neck. Create a “crappy week decompression kit,” also known as a collection of the finest lotions and potions to achieve the prefect bubble bath, and leave your worries behind.
