Q: I have heard a lot of great things about chia seeds, but how can I incorporate them into my diet?
Brandon Marsh answers
A: I like to think of myself as a bit of a “foodie,” because I enjoy spending time in the kitchen, experimenting with new and different ingredients. Of course, my love for cooking is complemented by my love for sport. So when I read “Born to Run” by Christopher McDougall, I was intrigued by the benefits of chia seeds. The book explains how chia seeds were a staple of the Tarahumara Indians, who are famous for their long-distance running prowess. With this knowledge top of mind, I cooked up a few ideas of my own.
You know they’re good for you, but how can you add more super seeds such as chia, hemp and flax into everyday meals? Here’s a simple solution (and you don’t even have to turn on the stove!). Blend up this Green Protein Machine Smoothie with fresh kale, cucumber, parsley and other healthy greens, then sprinkle in a scoop or two of each type of seed. A single serving supplies nearly 15 grams of protein — plus vitamins, minerals, fiber and omega-3s!
It’s been a delicious (and healthy) year! Plates were piled high with colorful salads. Meatless Mondays trickled over into Tuesdays (and Wednesdays and Thursdays…). You kicked gluten to the curb. Burned out your blender on micro-greens smoothies. Fell harder in love with chocolate than you ever thought possible, once you tasted it raw.
The holiday season may be on its way out, but the color green is here to stay! Blend up a banana-berry smoothie, then toss in a handful of veggies, some chia seeds and a scoop of vegan protein powder for a revitalizing, nutrient-packed drink.
Chocolate cravings sometimes hit hard. When nothing can stop you, blend up a batch of this guilt-free, dairy-free pudding. Its creaminess comes from a “surprise” healthy ingredient: silky-smooth, whipped avocado! Mix in raw cacao and coconut for rich flavor, plus a sprinkle of cinnamon and vanilla for natural sweetness.
