I was on the elliptical at the gym this weekend, trying to just jam to my tunes (The Grateful Dead, if you must know), and the guy working out next to me was having a love affair with his sweat towel. He kept burying his face in it, talking to it…it was really weird. Then in between tracks I realized he had a horrible cold and had been blowing his nose the whole time! (So much for my wild imagination.) Our gym stacks the equipment so close together that he might as well have been blowing his nose right on me; of course this morning I woke up with the telltale soreness in my throat. So I went straight for the elderberry.
It starts with just a little tickle. That’s the moment you know – you’re about to experience the discomfort of a sore throat, stuffy nose and non-stop sneezing for the next six days. I hate that feeling – we all hate that feeling.
This time of year, there are plenty of germs to go around. That’s why it’s important to be proactive about protecting yourself, by washing your hands frequently and avoiding contact with shared surfaces.
They may sound like they’re straight out of a fairytale, but elderberries are indeed real and are packed with real nutrients. Sometimes known by the Latin name Sambucus nigra or just simply “elder,” elderberries are deeply colored purplish-black berries that have been used for centuries to support health and well-being.
