It’s that time of year again—treats and temptations at every turn! Saying “No” all the time is no fun, but a cookie here and a few pieces of candy there can easily turn into half a bowl of cheese dip or an all-out splurge at a holiday party. I often advise my clients to carefully monitor portion size—it’s the best way to sample goodies, feel satisfied and not go so far overboard that your diet is sunk. But staying active is equally as important when it comes to staying fit and healthy over the holidays.

One year, my sister and I made salt dough ornaments with our mom. Homemade snowmen, Christmas trees, stars and candy canes adorned our tree that year. Those that survived two small children and a mischievous cat became a part of our tree decor for years to come. It’s one of my best childhood holiday memories.

With Halloween today and candy canes already appearing on store shelves (can you believe it?), ’tis the season for sugar – yikes! This week marks the kickoff of the holiday season and for many, this can lead to a seemingly bottomless black hole of sugar cravings, sleepless nights and stress overload.
One Halloween nearly a decade ago, when my oldest was a toddler and I still idealistically believed I’d be able to shield my children forever from the evils of trans fats, high-fructose corn syrup and Red Dye Number 5, I bought dried fruit instead of candy to give out to trick-or-treaters.
This move didn’t go over well. A sarcastic fifth grader said, “I’m sure the American Dental Association appreciates your idea of what candy is,” and declined my organic raisins. Moms openly gave me weird looks. I guess you can say I got lucky that my house didn’t end up TP’ed!
