My first Valentine’s Day as a new mom wasn’t exactly romantic—and not through lack of trying. We made reservations at a chic little bistro that wasn’t kid-friendly, I squeezed my postpartum self into something slinky that (gasp!) didn’t have an elastic waistband, and my husband even wore some cologne, which he hadn’t used since the days when we both began smelling like spit up and baby powder.

Making resolutions for the new year can be tricky. We all go for the standards; eat better, exercise more, weigh less and so on and so forth. This year, how about making a resolution that’s a little less egocentric? Good health and a strong body are, indisputably, important. Yet, if you stop and think about the year behind us, and you consider how lucky you are to still have your man, as well as your children, by your side, you will probably realize there’s no time like the present to make your New Year’s Resolutions about them.
It’s easy to get lost in a relationship. As women, we do most of the heavy lifting in the emotional part of our relationships. Because of that, we tend to get tunnel vision and all of our attention on the relationship we have with our man, often forgetting about the relationship we have with ourselves. Remember that friend you had in high school who disappeared from your life whenever she had a boyfriend? Don’t be her.
Spending time together isn’t always about making dinner reservations and shelling out big bucks to stay at a five-star hotel. Date night doesn’t have to happen outside of your home. Carve out a little time for yourselves and enjoy the comforts of home by planning your next getaway without actually going anywhere.
How we communicate isn’t just verbal. This is never more evident than in the midst of a heated disagreement with your significant other. No matter what you call them – fights, blow ups, arguments or, my personal favorite, periods of adjustment – there’s a way to end them and there’s a way to solve them.
