I’ve always been envious of parents who were able to enjoy taking their little ones out to dinner. As babies and toddlers, my kids always seemed to have a 30 minute time-limit at restaurants. After that point, we could expect whining, crying, standing on the furniture or other behavior that put a damper on the evening—for us and the other people who had the misfortune to be seated next to us!
Thinking that if you’re following the Paleo diet, you’ve got to live (and cook) in a bubble and never dine out? Quite the contrary. As much as I love cooking, I also enjoy dining out and do so quite regularly, all the while staying completely Paleo.

One of the most common dialogues I have with clients is how to safely eat gluten free when dining out. When possible, I like to have conversations with my clients that are specific to a given restaurant, whether it is a neighborhood eatery they want to try or options available while traveling. These conversations empower gluten-free diners to enter a restaurant knowing which options are safer than others and how to confidently ask questions about their preparations.
However, in a general conversation such as this one, it’s best to share overarching tips that can be applied to all eating occasions outside of the home.
