Even though we’re a mostly organic household, my kids are not immune to the marketing and advertising ploys of the big pre-packaged food companies out there. Not a grocery trip goes by where I don’t hear, “Mom, can we pleeeeeaaaase get this!” I’m working on teaching them how to find the healthy alternative to the chemical and dye filled kids’ snacks on the shelves today. So I’m coaching them through label reading and the difference between “natural” and “organic.”

If you’re breastfeeding, there’s a good chance that you’re (a) STARVING all.the.time, and (b) don’t have enough time to eat enough. Of course, that’s because (a) nursing a baby can burn 500 calories a day, and (b) with all that time you’re spending feeding, burping, changing and bathing your baby, who has time to sit down for a meal?
Whether the subject is See Dick and Jane Run reading basics or Advanced Earth Science, a day devoted to lessons, lectures and studying builds up an appetite. And that’s the problem: When you’re working your brain, not your body, you need to feed that hunger with snacks that are high in nutrition and lower in calories. Whether you grew up just a few miles from the sea and sand or enjoy the beach’s brilliance on holidays, there’s something about the ocean air that makes eating inevitable. My brother and I viewed snacks by the surf, in fact, as a required element in trips to the beach (sort of like sand in your swimsuit but much more fun!).
