Q: I suffer from perpetually red, flaky, itchy skin, and so does my two-year-old daughter. Can you recommend a soothing product that’s safe for both of us to use?
Dr. Linda Miles L. Ac., D.O.M. responds:
It’s important to realize that this uncomfortable and irritating skin issue may be a symptom of an internal problem manifesting externally.
First, I’d recommend making some lifestyle changes to correct potential digestive issues that may be at the root of the problem (your daughter may be experiencing these symptoms because she does not yet have a fully developed digestive tract).
As a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, I encourage people to modify their diets by avoiding processed foods containing artificial ingredients and preservatives. Taking digestive enzymes, and fish and flax oils, may also be beneficial. In addition, there are some topical solutions you can try.
Skincare products that contain calming, soothing natural ingredients while avoiding the use of coal or pine tars are best. Natural ingredients contain active components that can benefit the skin in multiple ways. To balance and restore the health of the skin, try using products that contain herbal extracts and skin-friendly vitamins.
