Lavender works really well as it doesn't irritate the skin when diluted with carrier oils. I've found placing it in warm bath water as the bath is filling to help spread the aroma throughout the bathroom quickly.

I'm glad you mentioned French lavender. It works great in the bath. If you place it in the water just as the tub is filling, it will both circulate through the water and dissipate as steam, quickly spreading the therapeutic scent throughout the bathroom!
