Some of you may remember when fluoride was the biggest thing to happen to toothpaste since the tube. Colgate, Crest and others aggressively advertised adding fluoride to toothpaste to boost its cavity-preventing qualities. While small amounts of fluoride have been proven to prevent tooth decay, excessive amounts may lead to the irreversible discoloration of teeth and more severe health issue such as a reduction in bone density and a weakening of the skeletal structure.
Because communities across America add fluoride to drinking water, and this water is used in the making of common food products such as baby formula and cereal, juices, soda, wine and beer, we Americans may be consuming more fluoride than we think – especially if it's in our toothpaste as well! Will your teeth fall out if you stop using fluoride toothpaste? Absolutely not!
There are many effective and safe natural toothpaste products available that contain no fluoride and work to keep teeth and gums healthy. Try Tom's of Maine, Jason or Nature's Gate to see what you think. Or, take a little Arm & Hammer baking soda and make toothpaste by adding water. It won't taste as good, but it'll do the trick.

Fluoridation jeopardizes health, according to data revealed in a 2006 National Research Council (NRC) report This took an expert panel 3 1/2 years to review hundreds of fluoride toxicology studies before reporting that fluoride poses risks to the thyroid gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others and can severely damage children's teeth. At least three panel members advise avoiding fluoridated water.
As a result of the NRC report, the American Dental Association and the Centers for Disease Control now advised that infant formula NOT be mixed with fluoridated water - a message that is not reaching the public.
Because of the NRC report, the National Kidney Foundation dropped its fluoridation support replacing it with this caution: “Individuals with CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] should be notified of the potential risk of fluoride exposure.” Another message that is not reaching the public.
The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Canada’s leading voice on environmental health issues, released a statement opposing fluoridation.
Researchers reporting in the Oct 6 2007 British Medical Journal indicate that fluoridation was never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical.
“A qualitative review of ...studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ,” concluded Tang el al., in "Fluoride and Children’s Intelligence: A Meta-analysis” in Biological Trace Element Research (e-published 8/10/08)
Scientific American editors wrote in January 2008, "Some recent studies suggest that over-consumption of fluoride can raise the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland"
