Parents, pay attention…summer is almost over and it is almost time for school to begin again (I know that you are applauding right now!) In addition to buying uniforms, school supplies and new shoes, it is now time to start thinking about proper nutrition. School time is also cold time, so let’s get a jump start on preventing illness!
Let's face it, kids do not eat what they should to maintain a nutritionally balanced diet. Factors such as busy schedules (fast food), food preparation, rapid ripening and preservatives all influence the recommended daily value of nutrients your child is getting each day. Without a properly balanced diet, your child may be more likely to succumb to the common cold, flu, virus or infection.
Here are some helpful tips to keep your children healthy and ready to learn:
• Teach your children about proper nutrition: help them to take an active role making healthy food choices
• Encourage your child to drink orange juice, spring water and tea, and eat fish, broccoli, green peas, green beans, apples and 100% organic whole grain pancakes/waffles.
• Provide your child with a natural multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. Most mass market products contain sweeteners, fillers, artificial colors and very low levels of essential nutrients. Look for all-natural ingredients in your child's multi-vitamin
• Your child may need an additional calcium/magnesium supplement to help ensure strong bones and a healthy growth rate, depending on diet. Talk to your child’s doctor.
• A pro-biotic (this means pro-life and promotes a healthy digestive flora) and Ester-C (a superior form of vitamin C that is retained longer and absorbed more efficiently, are recommended to strengthen the immune system.
Following these tips will help to keep your children in good health and ready to succeed in school!
