There’s nothing more frustrating than being unable to console a crying baby. You can cuddle, walk, rock, sing, or even drive around in circles, but sometimes little ones just keep wailing despite your best efforts.
Societies and cultures throughout the ages have used different techniques to calm cranky babies. In African societies, indigenous cultures of the Americas, and in some parts of Asia and Europe, “baby wearing” was (and still is) popular. Infant massage has been used throughout the world, especially in India and central America. Breastfeeding is universally recognized for its soothing effects.
Herbs are another tool that may help. Lavender, chamomile and lemon balm are all known for their calming benefits. With baby, use them as follows:
• Massage. After creating a calm environment for baby (dimmed lights, soft music), gently rub his or her skin, applying very light pressure with your fingertips and working in a circular motion. To enhance your touch, try a baby massage oil with calming ingredients such as marjoram, lavender and chamomile oils.
• Baths. Use herb-infused shampoos and body washes to help baby relax, with soothing essential oils of vanilla, lavender and chamomile.
• Room Diffuser. Fill your home with a relaxing aroma. Simply add five to 15 drops of essential oil to a room diffuser and plug into any standard outlet. Low levels of heat are used to volatilize the oil, spreading its scent throughout the room.
*Remember, do not apply essential oils directly to skin or ingest them. Always consult with your pediatrician before using herbal products with your baby.
