More often than I care to admit, I fall asleep without washing my face. I live with the repercussions of blemishes, premature aging, and overall oiliness, meaning I end up needing more skin care products and costing myself more money, not to mention I’m old enough to know better. Why? Why in the world do I do this to myself? Bad habits, baby, they’re hard to break.
We all have our bad habits. From snacking on junk food to nail biting, there’s something we would be better off without. Big or small, serious or silly, breaking a bad habit can feel like a feat of inhuman strength. But you can do it, and so can I, with the right attitude and a systematic approach to change.
A key element to success is looking at change as a gift rather than an obligation. A new set of Suncoat Water Based nail polish will encourage you to let those nails grow from chewed up nubs to chic and fashionable. Upgrade from the well-worn gym equipment to your own Valeo Yoga and Pilates Mat that you’ll be excited to show off. I decided to treat myself to the CSI 4 Step Skin Care System, knowing that if I had great products waiting to help me get great skin I’d be eager to put them to work.
If that still doesn’t get your behind in gear, find a friend to hold you accountable. Many of us have the same bad habits. By working together toward the same goal we can encourage, support and help each other make changes and achieve success. To tackle bad snacking habits, you and your partner should keep a food journal and check in with each other on regular intervals. You can champion your success and share tips for defeating your weak spots.
And if you’re really desperate to make a change but having trouble finding the motivation or willpower to make it through to the other side, resort to distraction. Take a walk when you feel like opening that bag of chips or grab a pen and write a letter when you catch yourself biting your fingernails. Because sometimes a bad habit is really boredom in disguise.
Don’t let your bad habits own you. Make a plan to take action and eliminate them from your life for good!
