I do a detox cleanse every once in a while, after I’ve been eating out too often and my jeans feel like they’ve shrunk in the wash (when I haven’t actually washed them.) A good detox is an energizing pick-me-up as much as it’s a slim-me-down. But—knock me over with a kale leaf—it turns out that I might not have been doing the best detox for my body type. My favorite TV doc just devoted an entire episode to choosing the right detox based on your body type and cravings, and I have to say it was very enlightening.
About this time of year, many of my clients’ thoughts turn to detoxification. People’s memories of their recent holiday food-and-drink indulgences are fresh in their minds and also on the scale. Fortunately, so is the optimism that spring is just around the corner. Learning to eat right–and sticking with a healthy-eating plan–is a much bigger challenge when it comes to shedding extra pounds and changing the shape of your body. You can kill yourself in the gym, sweating through an hour or more of cardio daily and lifting weights until you drop. But the results aren’t going to show if there’s a layer of fat sticking around due to a poor diet.
Staying healthy when you have a house full of walking, talking petri dishes –– I mean kids –– is no small feat. And while I don’t recommend you put your kids in a bubble until those spring bulbs you planted spout above the thawing ground, you can do a few things to keep all those germs at bay.
