Resolve to Evolve Week 4: Measure and Maintain

Do you know the #1 reason people don’t stick with their New Year’s resolutions? It’s because they have what I call the “I-Want-It-Now-Syndrome.” Symptoms of this include giving up on your goals because it’s taking longer than you expected to reach them. If you’re experiencing similar symptoms, read on to learn my quick and easy cure for impatience.

We have already touched on goal-setting, putting in the hard work, drumming up enthusiasm and making a commitment. One important piece that may still be missing is patience. You know patience is a virtue and one we all seem to take for granted at times. Unfortunately, without it, we have little chance of succeeding. To keep your cool and keep you on track with your goals, I have two prescriptions that will carry you to the winner’s circle in week 4 and beyond.

I prescribe monthly measurements.

Sometimes, we can’t see the forest for the trees. Perhaps you’ve become discouraged, because the scale hasn’t budged. But what if your body fat percentage has dropped? What about your energy level? You’ll never know how far you’ve come unless you take the time to measure your results. At the end of every fourth week, measure not only the physical improvements — weight, body fat, inches — but also take note of your energy level and stamina. If you started walking 10 minutes on the treadmill and now you’re up to 30 minutes, that’s progress. Don’t discount these small accomplishments along the way. Congratulate (even reward) yourself for reaching new heights, and you’ll be able to maintain a healthy, happy outlook no matter what the numbers say.

I prescribe persistence over perfection.

After the birth of my second son, I took my before photo. I was so shocked and horrified, I immediately began my weight-loss journey. About two and a half months into it, nothing had changed. I weighed the same but was exercising and eating perfectly. What was the deal?! At this point, I asked myself: Do I give up and give in, or do I at least live a healthy lifestyle even if I don’t lose weight? Once I realized I didn’t need my body to be perfect — I needed it to be healthy — the choice was easy. So, I kept on my journey and at the 3-month mark it all came together. The weight began to melt off, revealing sexy muscle tone I never knew I had.

My point is if you don’t see any physical improvements right away, DON’T WORRY! They will come! You have to give yourself the gift of time and allow your body to catch up with the new, healthy, strong and sexy you.

Final note: Exercise, supplementation and eating healthy are not elements of a one-time event. It’s a journey to be enjoyed. So, revel in the process of getting healthy and maintaining your wonderful results!
